ShMILE2 project "From experimentation to dissemination of the Ecolabel in the Mediterranean (De l’expérimentation à la diffusion de l’Ecolabel en Méditerranée)" with a duration of 24 months, is a project financed through the ENPI CBC MED Strategic Projects programme. It has the objective of promoting sustainable tourism by reducing the environmental impact of tourist accommodation in the Mediterranean basin through the spreading of the Ecolabel certification system for tourist accommodation. Tourism is an essential component for the economic development of many Mediterranean countries. However, this potential is accompanied by limits and problems. For example environmental problems, such as the increased levels of solid waste, waste water and coastal areas consumed by tourist infrastructures. As well as those caused by the uncontrolled use of finite resources. Turning towards sustainable tourism is consequently almost mandatory. Particularly when one considers that it is the Mediterranean, in which Sardinia is one of the most attractive places, which will have the most sensitive growth of activity in this sector.
The Sardinian Region has already undertaken actions on separate occasions aimed at orienting sustainable island tourism. In this context the Agency, through the ShMILE2 project, aims to enhance a tourist offer to a high standard and reduced environmental impact in the coastal sphere. The main tool around which Conservatoria will develop its actions for coastal areas is the European Ecolabel for tourist accommodation, a management methodology strongly aimed at environmental sustainability. Through the creation and diffusion of hospitality sector training courses and guidance, the project intends to tackle the internal difficulties faced by enterprises. Within the project, the main duty of the Agency is to organise workshops themed for the regional tourist accommodation sector and for the young professionals from all of the partner countries. It also has to provide assistance and support to tourist establishments.

The lead partner, the Chambre de Commerce et de l’Industrie Nice Côte d’Azur, has chosen the Conservatoria delle Coste, together with the Centro Servizi Promozionali per le Imprese (a special Agency of the Chamber of Commerce of Cagliari), to represent the Italian part of this important international project. The other partners are: ADEME (Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l’Energie - France), Regional Unit of Halkidiki and Institute of Tourism Development of Greece (Greece), CITET (Centre International des Technologies de l’Environnement de Tunis - Tunisia), Communauté Urbaine Nice Côte d’Azur (France), INNORPI (Institut National de la Normalisation et de la Propriété Industrielle – France), Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (Jordan) e CEDARE (Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe – Egypt).
