FOR_ACCESS
The FOR_ACCESS project “Sustainable access and shared management of defensive fortifications” addresses themes of safeguard and enhancement of the cultural heritage represented by the defensive fortifications present in the entire sea and coastal space of the PO Marittimo. From West Liguria to Tuscany and the whole of Corsica and Sardinia, hundreds of fortified settlements of varying nature, size and age tell centuries of history and the troubles that led to the construction of these complex defensive systems.
The general objective of FOR_ACCESS is to enhance, also for tourism purposes, this incredible network of heritage that is spread across the cross-border cooperation area (Corsica/Sardinia/Province of Lucca/Province of Grosseto/low Liguria) by assuring sustainable access to the sites, cooperation between public bodies and operators in the management of the circuit, and its place in the international tourist market. The project therefore aims to involve the wider public to achieve a greater understanding of the defensive fortifications. The recipients of the actions are both the existing local operators within the area of cooperation (public bodies, economic operators, site management authorities, tourist promotion centres, other stakeholders) and tourists (schools, historians, art lovers, other visitors), with particular attention for those less-abled.
The projected intervention lines follow four specific objectives:
Specific objective 1: to promote the use of historical and architectural heritage of the defensive fortifications in the areas of cooperation;
Specific objective 2: to adopt a sustainable approach in working towards the preservation, accessibility, management and operation of the sites (RES / Green Public Procurement);
Specific objective 3: to refine and test ways of cooperation and management between operators and agencies of the four European regions involved in the project;
Specific objective 4: to promote awareness of the tourist circuit of defensive fortifications in the landscape of tourism products available in the Mediterranean.
The FOR_ACCESS partnership includes all the four regions covered by the Operational Programme “Italy - Maritime France”, and has an organization closely connected to the project objectives. All levels of government are represented: Conservatoria delle Coste, Municipality of Pula (lead partner), Province of Lucca, Province of Grosseto, Municipality of Sarzana, Province of Olbia-Tempio, the Colletivité Territoriale de Corse, Departmént de la Corse du Sud.
