In collaboration with the Municipality of Alghero, Conservatoria delle Coste foresees different restoration, maintenance and consolidation works to preserve the dunes area from erosion in Maria Pia beach. This intervention is one of the actions of the “Integrated communication and environmental education strategy to spread the principles of integrated coastal management” project, and is financed with resources from the European Regional Development Fund 2007-2013 - Regional Environmental Action Plan (PAAR).
Considering the significant success of previous defensive works implemented by the Municipality of Alghero in Maria Pia area, it is now apparent that there is a need to consolidate and increase in space and time the results obtained, and to undertake efforts to completely restore and consolidate the works and efforts already in place. The specific actions anticipated are:
- restoring the dune protection lines (a chessboard layout of base mesh and wind barriers);
- consolidating of protective actions by reinforcing defensive lines using techniques which bring beached material, double the defensive lines and maintain the existing defences;
- planting programmes (replanting tamarisk bushes, cleaning the collar of the trunk and the vegetative apex of palms), filling of failed areas;
- protection of works with fencing and positioning of illustrative posters explaining the end purpose of the intervention;
- providing footpaths through the works with walkways facing down from the dominant wind;
- User information efforts.
